RSD nurses visited with SLC students in health class regarding first aid and CPR. Students were able to practice CPR techniques on the dummies, shown how to properly use an EpiPen, and given instructions on what to do if they are ever in a situation requiring first aid.

Students in Ms. Guiltner's Biology class recently participated in a Candy Protein Synthesis Lab. They simulated protein synthesis by acting out the steps of transcription and translation in the classroom. Students chose the gene they wanted to express, transcribed it, and translated it into a protein made up of amino acids (candy) linked together with peptide bonds (toothpicks).

Students Angelique Barton and Abby Rackley study grammar in Coach Cranor's English class.

Student Spotlight
Illianna Carrington is a junior at the Secondary Learning Center. After high school graduation, she plans to attend college and major in nursing. She is looking forward to a lengthy career as a nurse.
At SLC, Illianna excels in the classroom. When asked about why she was successful at SLC, she replied, “I can pretty much work at my own speed and the teachers help and support me in anything. The counselor is the greatest person to talk to about anything and they will always work with you no matter the situation.”
At SLC, we have several students like Illianna who are juggling school and adult responsibilities. We are very proud of Illianna and wish her the best.

Students modeling cell differentiation. Awesome!!

Members of SLC's JAG class participated in mock interviews on December 13, 2018, before Christmas break. Many thanks to retired RSD teacher, Christy Cranor, for coming to help.

Everyone at SLC is excited to be back and working again! We have had a great week and are looking forward to a great semester!!

SLC parents and students, next week is semester exam week before a long holiday break. Please remember that December 20 is an hour early release.

Students in Ms. Guiltner's classes took a few minutes at the end of class to make Christmas ornaments for the SLC Christmas tree this week. They enjoyed having a few minutes for crafty fun. We can't wait to deck the halls!

If you are need of a good free Thanksgiving Meal, here are some places you can go. Happy Thanksgiving!

On October 24th, all SLC students gathered for the statewide previewing of the video Chasing the Dragon. Arkansas State Trooper, Kyle Johnson came to watch the videos and then stayed to talk and answer questions with the students afterward.

The new digital sign at SLC/Gardner Campus was completed last month. This is a great way to communicate with parents and students about upcoming events and student accomplishments.

On October 17th, Russellville hosted the NWA ALE conference. As part of the conference, alternative educators from several districts toured Secondary Learning Center. Students served as ambassadors leading the tours and answering any questions about the school.

Seniors from SLC went to UACCM on September 29th for a college campus visit. The students were able to tour each of the buildings and hear about all the opportunities UACCM offers students. At the end of the tour, the students ate lunch in the activities center and visit with students already attending the college. UACCM has not only 2-year transferable classes but also a wonderful vocational program that prepares students for the workforce. Our goal at SLC is to expose students to as many of these opportunities and let them realize that college is so much more than a classroom, its hands on experiences that train you for good paying jobs.

Ms. Shaw and Mrs. Hickenbottom have “REV”ed up student interaction through the co-teach English classes. During these activities, students are up from seats, interacting with peers, and involved with the lessons. Students have participated in social and auditory activities for analyzing multiple styles of texts. Similar activities can be seen in other co-teach setting in Secondary Learning Center.

Mr. Hettinga uses a wide array of student-centered activities to engage students in the social sciences. Most kids would think history is boring and would rather discuss current issues and trends that have an impact on their everyday lives. By implementing various teaching and learning strategies, students are able to analyze the impact of events that may have happened several hundred years ago and relate them to our culture. The teachers at SLC create student-centered learning environment where our kids’ needs are met in a real and relevant way.

Students in Ms. Guiltner's science class have been conducting investigations this week. Environmental Science students are studying the cycling of matter in Earth by studying the layering of isopropyl alcohol and mineral oil before, during, and after applying heat. The observed patterns provide evidence for the cycling of matter in Earth.

SLC would like to give a special thanks for the Marines coming by last week and spending lunch with our students.

SLC is off to a great start this year! Students now have their own laptops during school and are actively engaged in learning. The teachers are extra pumped this year and ready to educate! This is going to be the best year yet! #SLCROCKS
